T0363. The Miracle of the Wooden Sword

Birbal praises the resilience of poor. For example, Akbar and Birbal find the shoemaker feasting. Akbar tests him by outlawing shoemaking. The shoemaker decides to get ice and sell cold water; he makes even more money, and so feasts again. Akbar outlaws water sellers, so the shoemaker joins army. They give him sword. He sells it and replaces it with a wooden sword. At a party, he confides this secret to Birbal. Akbar decides to execute brother-in-law; he summons the shoemaker as executioner. The shoemaker insists the brother-in-law is innocent. "If I speak truth, God will turn my sword to wood!" he says. Akbar frees the brother-in-law and rewards the shoemaker.

Notes: This appears also as a Joha story in Koen-Sarano.
