Akbar entrusted his parrot, which is a gift from a holy man, to his attendant, telling him to keep it well. Akbar will execute whoever brings news of its death, but the parrot dies. Birbal then says he had seen the parrot meditating, head sky upwards; Akbar comes to see and finds the bird is dead. "Why this joke?" Akbar asks. "I didn't want to be executed," says Birbal.
