T0325. A Hundred Coins from Heaven

Nasruddin asks God for 100 gold coins in back wages. A rich neighbor throws 99 coins in a sack to Nasruddin. Nasruddin says to God, "You can owe me one." The neighbor then says it was a joke and wants his coins back. Nasruddin refuses. The neighbor takes him to court. Nasruddin cannot go because of torn cloak and lame donkey; the neighbor gives him cloak and horse. In court, Nasruddin accuses neighbor of making wild claims: not just the coins; he thinks my cloak is his, and my horse. The judge rules in Nasruddin's favor.

Notes: In another version, Nasruddin makes a big show of refusing to take less than 100 coins, which is why the neighbor tests him, but then Nasruddin spoils the test by saying, "Okay, God, I guess you can owe me one!"
