T0265. Counting the Donkeys

Nasruddin is taking nine donkeys to market; he rides one, and when he counts, one is missing. He dismounts; all is well. Repeats. Finally he decides to just walk so he can keep close eye on them. When he explains to the donkey master at the market, he calls Nasruddin the tenth donkey, but with only two legs.

Notes: In some versions, Nasruddin is taking donkeys to the millers; the farmers load up their donkeys and then assign one person to drive them all to the mill and back. In version in Barnham, Nasruddin is on his way to the mill, and he meets a traveler along the way; he is the one who points out Nasruddin's mistake, and he calls the donkeys Nasruddin's "foster-brothers." In Johnson-Davies' Goha story, he decides to walk because he gains a donkey that way.
