The teacher tries to scare the pupils by saying baklava is poisoned. Nasruddin eats the baklava and tells teacher he was only trying to commit suicide because of shame over his poor studies.
Notes: In Downing's version, it is a schoolboy who tricks Nasruddin. He says he opened the drawer to get a knife to sharpen his quill, but he broke the knife and feared punishment; he could not kill himself by throwing himself in well because that would pollute well, so he ate the baklava.
